In Veldhoven, the discussion about speed limits is in full swing. Should we switch to 30 kilometres per hour everywhere, or should we maintain the current speed limits on our main roads?
On behalf of Hart voor Veldhoven, we would like to explain how we see this issue. Our vision is clear: safety where it is really needed, and flow where it is possible. We take a down-to-earth approach, with an eye for everyday reality.
30 km/h in neighbourhoods: Safety through tailor-made solutions
For us, road safety comes first, especially for children who must be able to play and cycle safely in their own neighbourhood. That is why in our residential areas cars are guests, and cyclists and pedestrians are given priority.
At the same time, we are not in favour of a rigid rule that imposes 30 km/h across all neighbourhoods by default. Why not? Because every street and every neighbourhood is different. We believe in tailor-made solutions for each situation. We look at what is really needed for optimal safety in each area, instead of just placing the same traffic sign everywhere.
50 or 70 km/h on main arteries: Flow is essential
On roads such as the Heerbaan and Kempenbaan, our position is nuanced. These are important roads for our municipality, where good traffic flow is essential for residents and entrepreneurs.
We do not want to simply lower the speed limit to 50 km/h. First we want to investigate whether other measures work better. Think of better infrastructure for cyclists and safer crossings. Lowering speed is one of the options for us, but certainly not automatically the best solution.
The region: The ‘ring road’ around Eindhoven
To really reduce traffic pressure in Veldhoven, we also look beyond our municipal boundaries. In regional consultations we advocate for the construction of a complete ring road for car traffic around Eindhoven. This way, through-traffic does not have to cut through our neighbourhoods, which directly improves safety and liveability in Veldhoven.
Our promise: Listening and taking action
Hart voor Veldhoven is firmly rooted in the community. We listen to the concerns of residents about unsafe locations and take decisive action to solve them, without losing sight of the accessibility of our municipality.
Do you have tips, comments or questions, or do you recognise unsafe situations? We would be happy to get in touch and look for a solution together.
